This is our audience...

The Tim Hortons Brier Tankard (at the highway Tim Hortons 2 years ago)

People who say "Dear sirs, could you please inform your curling on-air reporter that Russ Howard is not at this year's Brier in Winnipeg"

In my sports director's defense, Russ Howard IS at the Brier. He's just on in the afternoon.

Who says there's no fighting in European hockey?

Russian Superleague, Traktor Chelyabinsk vs. AK Bars Kazan (you may recall, that's the team where most of the good NHL players went to during the lockout)

I don't know, nor do I care, who won that game.

How about we not wait so long for the next one?

November 27, 1989 editions of the Regina LeaderPost, and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix

The November 26, 2007 edition of the 'Riderville' Leader-Post

I still can't believe the Riders won the Grey Cup last night. It is the first title win since 1989, eighteen years ago today, and third championship total in the 97 years the club's been around.

On a news standpoint, I think there was more coverage of this game than the other ones I have seen (89 and 1997). That's what happens when even an appearance in the game is rare. I read the 1989 editions of the two local papers before the game yesterday, and I was taken back to a time when 2 Litres of Pepsi sold for $1.89 at Bi-Rite Drugs, there was no such thing as the GST (it was in the planning stages then), and the Grey Cup telecast on CFN featured the introduction to Canada of a super-slo-motion camera, similar to the one used by abc NFL broadcasts. Keep in mind, this is long before cable-cams and high definition television.
Over lunch, I went up to 7-Eleven and got Grey Cup editions of the National Post, Globe and Mail, Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun, and Medicine Hat News. The only papers I was disappointed not to find were the Winnipeg Free Press and Winnipeg Sun (that store only carries the weekend issues), not sure how they're taking it over there.
It is a high that will last until the next football season, and hopefully we can have it more often than every couple of decades.

That's embarrassing

I was watching Sportscentre this morning, and noticed that England failed to qualify for the Euro 2008 soccer tournament.

England missing a soccer tournament.

That's like Canada not making it to the Olympics in hockey.

That's like the USA not making the World Cup in baseball.

That's like India not making it to a cricket championship.

Pakistan and field hockey

China with ping pong

I could go on...

Grey Cup Bound!

Dream season for Rider Nation, and it will end with a dream matchup.

Not a good weekend as a sports fan

It seems that last weekend was a bad one for the sports teams that I support.

The Riders had their regular season finale against Toronto last Saturday in Regina and dropped it by a painful 43-13 score. That phoning-in gave the Argos first in the East, and has us Rider fans on the downs heading into the west semi-final against Calgary.

The Broncos lost twice, 5-3 on the road in Brandon on Friday, and 4-3 after a shootout against Edmonton at home on Saturday

The Canucks are horrible at home with a 1-6 record at GM Place. They won against Colorado on Saturday, but that was on the road. That doesn't make me feel any better

Probably the worst was the Colts-Patriots game on Sunday. I was actually excited and pumped for the game, something I don't usually feel for a regular season NFL match, and I slept through it, the result of me being up since 3:00am on Saturday and Sunday. Adding insult to injury, the Colts lost 24-20, and I woke up just in time to see the Patriots with the ball at the 2-minute warning, with Colts with no time-outs.

Not to sound like a bandwagon jumper, if things don't get better soon, I might have to question my allegiances, or do my best to not sleep during major sporting events.

Oh, one more note, the Hamilton Ti-Cats fired their GM, Marcel Dejardins, at around 11:00pm EST last night. I kinda know the time because I got the text alert from TSN just after 10:00pm. I mean, why fire a guy so late at night? Why not wait until the next morning? It'd be one less sleepless night for him.

Remember, shop class isn't required to play football

Chris Szarka, a popular player for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, may be done for the year after injuring himself while working with, of all things, a table saw.

The good news is, he still has all his fingers, but think of how this may have been prevented if he upgraded his tools and used a hot dog.

Something I only first heard about today...

It appears the upcoming regular season of the National Lacrosse League may be cancelled if a labour dispute is not settled before midnight EDT tonight.

I seriously did not know anything about it until today

I guess some people (you know who you are), didn't know nor care about the NHL's labour troubles back a few years ago, and some of those people were probably lacrosse fans. Guess what, us hockey fans are returning those sentiments

Almost Roo-dkill! (Yeah, I know)

In North America, we have deer. Australia have Kangaroos

Never, as far as I know, has a deer run on to a racetrack.

Another name change to get used to.

The major ice rink in Swift Current, the city-operated Centennial Civic Centre, is currently on the home stretch of major renovations. Everything's changing with it. More seating, new luxury boxes, even a new name.

Innovation Credit Union just bought the naming rights to the arena for $600,000 over ten years. Therefore, the Centennial Civic Centre will henceforth be known as...

Picture from scbroncos.com

The Credit Union iplex.

Don't ask me what I think of the name, because in the end I have nothing against it. It is an odd name, but if you had $600,000 that went entirely and directly to capital improvements to the rink, you can call it whatever you wish.

Plus, the name couldn't be Innovation Place or Credit Union Centre, and I seriously can't think of a better name. I bet you can't either.

Literally more than, well, any honest person(s) could afford

The MacLaren Mercedes Formula One Racing Team just got in trouble for spying on a rival team this year. The penalty, the 2007 Manufacturers title, and $100,000,000.00 US.

That's one hundred million American dollars.

Who's running Formula One now?

Republished/Updated: It was so good, they're doing it again

The SaskTel Max homepage with some good news

Originally published August 24, 2007:
You remember earlier when I said I didn't watch last Saturday's unforgettable Rider game because I went to bed early? Well, I think I'm gonna make up for that now

Until 11:59pm ST Sunday night, SaskTel Max will replay CBC's broadcast of last Saturday's memorable game between the Riders and the Eskimos, in its entirety (keep in mind, we saw the whole thing live on CBC Regina), on Max Local on Demand channel 48 (of course, SaskTel is a huge sponsor of the Riders, they have the naming rights of the Million-dollar MaxTron video board). If you don't know about it, it's like a community cable channel, but it also has DVD/VCR playback capabilities. You can pause, rewind and replay the show as many times as you want, and you're not bound by schedules. (SaskTel has a lot of this kind of programming, but I'll talk about it sometime later)

I also checked in at work this morning and a couple of Shaw subscribers said the game is also being shown on their community channel. I can't tell you what times or whether or not they're doing it again. I don't know about Access if you live in Regina though, keep watching Cable 7.

Either way, I will watch it, and also tape it for posteriety. It'll be something to keep for the grankids (if VCRs survive for that long)

Updated September 12: I gave SaskTel some kind words shortly after seeing the game, and I bet some other people did the same. I just got a news release at work reading SaskTel made a deal with TSN to make every Riders regular season game from now until the end of the season available on Max Local on Demand. The Labour Day Classic, and the Banjo Bowl are there now.

Can't wait 'til November.

The Riders' final play on offence. Saskboy, once again, responsible for the video

Yesterday's Labour Day Classic, where the Riders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-26, was a game worthy of its label. In fact, it may be the best Labour Day game at least in my lifetime. The game had seven lead changes, and the Riders was actually close to losing this time, but it was settled with a 27-yard run by QB Kerry Joseph, right up the gut of the Bomber defense, who, like us, probably thought the Riders would only try for a good field goal position. Not this time.

What I'll remember most about this game was the hype surrounding it. Sports writers, broadcasters, even me, were all billing this as a Grey Cup preview, as this game featured the two teams at the front of their divisions. If this is the game we expect in the 95th Grey Cup final coming up at the Rogers Centre, where the Riders last won the cup in 1989, well then I can't wait until November.

Oh, speaking of that. When the CFL blacked out the Riders-Eskimos game in July (in which I got around by watching their broadband stream on tsn.ca) TSN showed CFN's broadcast of the 1989 Grey Cup. The Riders won that game against the Eskimos 54-14, and have won four more since.

Also, get a load of those throwback sweaters and lids the Riders sported. It honestly felt like I was watching a game from the 70s on ESPN Classic, rather than live on TSN. Also Kerry Joseph is also looking more and more like Ron Lancaster each and every game.

What's in store for the next one at CanadInns Stadium? The Banjo Bowl if you will. If you go, remember to hang a right on Milt Stegall Drive.

Look at that get-up!: Roberto Luongo

The Vancouver Canucks have just announced their new sweaters and colour schemes for the upcoming season.

Goalie Roberto Luongo models them.

Looks good. A decent combination of the past and the present. Much better than those old neon-orange "Flying V" uneys they wore in the 80s

The Funniest Things I've Heard, Read and Seen this Week (August 19-25)

Heard - Sportsnet Connected with Mike Toth and David Bastl on Saturday. I gotta watch that show more. But in all fairness, Sportscentre was around longer

Read - A blunt message for Current President Bush, immortallized forever on Google Earth (it's near Dover, MA by the way)

Seen - In an attempt to stay up on Saturday afternoon, I watched season one of How I Met Your Mother. Easily, the best scene of that season...

Believe it or not, we're number one!

Game highlight film from the CFLs YouTube Channel

For the first time since 1976, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have a 6-2 record, and are now statistically the best team in the Canadian Football League. And it took a very wild and eventful contest against the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday night to earn that distinction. The game was played during, DURING, a thunderstorm. Heavy rain, lightning, and a power failure at the stadium caused a 55-minute weather delay in the 4th Quarter with the Riders trailing 32-27. When play resumed, the Riders scored a field goal and a touchdown to win the game in front of several thousand brave fans at Mosaic Stadium

I didn't go to the game, and a early morning kept me from watching all of it, and let me say, I will regret it for the rest of my life. But many other people did and they all have their opinions, especially about CBC (the channel that telecast the game, and I remind, are on their final year of the national CFL contract), who didn't return to the game in all areas of the country but Saskatchewan (the blackout was lifted) after the delay ended.

Rod Pedersen (of course he was at the game, he's the radio voice of the Riders)

News Talk Radio's Green Zone had a whole bunch of audio interviews about the game and the delay, especially with Rider CEO and President, Jim Hopson, who said they were very close to calling the game.

Globesports.com had a press release from the CBC about their handling of the game broadcast

Abandoned Stuff by Saskboy was at the game, with a camcorder that recorded the very moment the power failure hit the stadium, and in a move that now puts his blog on my Links that I Like, posted the video.

Jon Keen, newsroom colleague, took time out of his impressive coverage of Bronco Training Camp to give a tip of the hat to the Riders, and a wag of the finger to the CBC

James Whittingham, one half of Cable Regina's James and Kevin Show, showed his displeasure to CBC HD's coverage

The Leader-Post, who put a photo that even Joe Rosenthal would be envious of, on the front page of today's paper

USA Today, yes, that USA Today, had a story about CBC showing Nick Nolte's The Good Thief instead of the end of the football game and compared it to the infamous Heidi Game

And speaking of the Heidi Game, the CBC will forever be publicly connected to it by Wikipedia
