Something to do if you're REALLY bored...

...listen to almost all the songs the Weather Network has ever used

My first, second, third and fourth favourite songs have no-embed settings on them, so I posted my fifth favourite.

Reitmans one, Haute Couture zero

I don't think I would have liked it anyway.

Viva Laughlin, a show I said I would watch this season, got cancelled after two broadcasts, and I haven't even seen a single episode.

The shows ran on Thursday and Sunday, and I recorded both episodes off the DVR, but haven't gotten around to watching them yet. I think I'll just get rid of them now.

In hindsight, I should have paid attention to the warning signs. A murder-mystery-musical starring Hugh Jackman. Those are four things I don't think should have been put together.

The good news is, The Amazing Race 12 is being premiered earlier now, the first episode will show on November 4, rather than in January.

Anyone got a mop?

Today, CBS replayed Bob Barker's final episode of The Price is Right, thus marking the end, and beginning, of an era in the daytime game show universe

Monday, Drew Carey takes over the show, and this is an exclusive clip of one of the early episodes of the upcoming season

That money might buy a steaming of the Plinko prop.

Bill Nye was so 1994

This is officially the coolest show on television.

And it's on PBS. How about that.

You know, someone told me the only people who watch PBS "are 97 and watching the IVs run out in their hospital beds". Well that guy just lost his invite to my big birthday party three years from now.

Can someone call the nurse for me?

How True...

From insidethecbc.com

At the CBC Headquarters in Toronto, ON

Visitor is in one of the elevators. Clearly, he’s lost. Nearly every floor button is pushed. A CBC staffer gets on and rides one floor down.

Visitor: How do you get out of this building?
CBC staffer: You can’t.
Visitor: Huh?
(door opens, CBCer walks out saying): It’s how we get funding. We hold visitors for ransom. Have a nice day.”
The visitor doesn’t smile.

I'm smilin'

Mr. Hollywood's Cable Box

Sorry I haven't updated this weekend, I was pretty much glued to my chair watching television.

Last Thursday, I got the SaskTel Max DTVR and a new box, a $10.00/month rental, and I must say it is paying for itself so far. The recording functionality is working great, I already have my favourite shows queued up on it, but I still have to get used to the fact I can pause and rewind actual television.

One of my favourite features so far is the replay button, where you can skip back 10 seconds on a live or recorded program. I was watching the Sunday Night Football game (Patriots and Chargers), and early in the fourth quarter, the Chargers made a touchdown pass, even though the receiver (Antonio Gates) went out of bounds before the line. I hit replay, and found that the ball crossed the line when Gates reached forward with his hand just as he was going down. The Chargers still lost 38-14.

Another good feature is the picture-in-guide. Before, when I hit the guide button, the sound and picture shut off as the guide took up the full screen. Now, when I call up the guide, the current channel shows in a window on the top right corner of the screen, thus ensuring you don't miss anything, and you can still rewind the show when you go back, as long as you don't change the channel.

But, it has it's bad spots too. Not too often, the recordings start a few minutes late, or not at all. You have a choice of giving extra time to the recording, but it's in 15-minute intervals, and I would prefer it to be one minute at a time, and if I had HD (the box takes HD as long as you have it, by the way), I can't tune to another channel if I am recording something in High Definition, as there is only room for one HD stream into the home.

Sure, I've been talking about SaskTel a lot lately. I am not being paid by them, nor am I an employee of them. I am just a common customer in good standing, but I seriously recommend this to anyone who is able to get it.

Now another topic. I think in football, the ball and the man must cross the line together to count a touchdown. Discuss.

Republished/Updated: It was so good, they're doing it again

The SaskTel Max homepage with some good news

Originally published August 24, 2007:
You remember earlier when I said I didn't watch last Saturday's unforgettable Rider game because I went to bed early? Well, I think I'm gonna make up for that now

Until 11:59pm ST Sunday night, SaskTel Max will replay CBC's broadcast of last Saturday's memorable game between the Riders and the Eskimos, in its entirety (keep in mind, we saw the whole thing live on CBC Regina), on Max Local on Demand channel 48 (of course, SaskTel is a huge sponsor of the Riders, they have the naming rights of the Million-dollar MaxTron video board). If you don't know about it, it's like a community cable channel, but it also has DVD/VCR playback capabilities. You can pause, rewind and replay the show as many times as you want, and you're not bound by schedules. (SaskTel has a lot of this kind of programming, but I'll talk about it sometime later)

I also checked in at work this morning and a couple of Shaw subscribers said the game is also being shown on their community channel. I can't tell you what times or whether or not they're doing it again. I don't know about Access if you live in Regina though, keep watching Cable 7.

Either way, I will watch it, and also tape it for posteriety. It'll be something to keep for the grankids (if VCRs survive for that long)

Updated September 12: I gave SaskTel some kind words shortly after seeing the game, and I bet some other people did the same. I just got a news release at work reading SaskTel made a deal with TSN to make every Riders regular season game from now until the end of the season available on Max Local on Demand. The Labour Day Classic, and the Banjo Bowl are there now.

Me Fail English? That's Unpossible

Some Test the Nation paraphernalia. Get your own here
Hot off the heels of Test the Nation: IQ last March, CBC just ran Test the Nation: Watch Your Language earlier tonight, an interactive play-at-home quiz that tests language and speech. I did surprisingly well, actually, I got a 78%, which I think is a bit higher than my English marks from school.

Yeah, you laugh. How did you do?
One thing I noticed through the two-hour broadcast, an English teacher from Swift Current Comprehensive High School was playing the game in the studio with other English teachers, taking on the likes of advertising copywriters, comedians, word gamers, romance fiction novelists, and fraternities/sororities. Last March in the IQ test, Mayor Sandy Larson was on the show.

I must disclose, however, I used the spell check before publishing. I did just score a 78%, you know.

What I will be watching (September-November 2007)

Yeah. I'm lame

The new fall TV season is finally upon us, a time that I look forward to every year, when new shows start, and new episodes of my favourite shows that weren't cancelled in the season previous begin. And I am happy to say this year, it's going to be much easier, because today, SaskTel finally, FINALLY!, released their new Digital TV Recorder for Max, which they announced they would do more than a year ago. In the meantime, I bought six VHS tapes in bulk, one for each day of the week except for Saturday (hockey's the only thing on that night, and even though I am a fan, I don't tape games), and taped my shows accordingly, so I could enjoy the nightlife, or work, and watch the shows again over the weekends or during the day. I won't get the updated set-top box with the recorder (yeah, I'm gonna get it. Just called SaskTel tonight.) until between 8:00am and 12:00noon September 13, but even then it will be just before the networks start their seasons.

Last time, I planned my TV schedule, watching or taping at least one show each night. That stuck pretty well, so I am doing it again. Here's how it looks (shows in bold are new, all times are my local time).

Monday:

  • 6:00-6:30pm How I Met Your Mother (E! Hamilton)
  • 6:30-7:00pm The Big Bang Theory (CBS Minneapolis-St. Paul)
  • 7:00-7:30pm Two and a Half Men (CBS Minneapolis-St. Paul)
  • 7:30-8:00pm Corner Gas (CTV Toronto)
  • 8:00-9:00pm CSI: Miami (CTV Toronto)
  • 9:00-10:00pm Chuck (CityTV Edmonton)

Tuesday:

  • 7:00-8:00pm Reaper (CityTV Toronto)
  • 8:00-9:00pm Law & Order: SVU (CTV Toronto)
  • 9:00-10:00pm Pushing Daisies (CTV BC)

Wednesday:

  • 6:30-7:00pm No Opportunity Wasted (CBC Toronto)
  • 7:00-7:30pm Back to You (Global Regina)
  • 7:30-8:00pm 'Til Death (Global Regina)
  • 8:00-9:00pm CSI:NY (CTV Toronto)

Thursday:

  • 6:00-6:30pm My Name is Earl (NBC Boston)
  • 6:30-7:00pm 30 Rock (NBC Boston)
  • 7:00-8:00pm The Office (NBC Boston)
  • 8:00-9:00pm Big Shots (CTV Toronto)
  • 9:00-10:00pm Shark (Global Regina)
  • 10:00-11:00pm CSI:Crime Scene Investigation (CBS Seattle)

Friday:

  • 7:00-8:00pm Friday Night Lights (Global Regina)
  • 8:00-9:00pm Las Vegas (Global Regina)

Sunday:

  • 5:00-6:00pm Viva Laughlin (E! Hamilton)
  • 6:00-6:30pm The Simpsons (FOX Boston)
  • 6:30-7:00pm To be determined
  • 7:00-8:00pm Law & Order: CI (CTV Regina)
  • 8:00-8:30pm Family Guy (Global Regina)

Basically, it will change sometime if a new show gets cancelled and when the time change comes in place in November, moving the shows on the non-local stations to an hour later (Saskatchewan doesn't follow DST). So I'll check back on it in around that time.

The Funniest Things I've Heard, Read and Seen this Week (August 19-25)

Heard - Sportsnet Connected with Mike Toth and David Bastl on Saturday. I gotta watch that show more. But in all fairness, Sportscentre was around longer

Read - A blunt message for Current President Bush, immortallized forever on Google Earth (it's near Dover, MA by the way)

Seen - In an attempt to stay up on Saturday afternoon, I watched season one of How I Met Your Mother. Easily, the best scene of that season...

Believe it or not, we're number one!

Game highlight film from the CFLs YouTube Channel

For the first time since 1976, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have a 6-2 record, and are now statistically the best team in the Canadian Football League. And it took a very wild and eventful contest against the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday night to earn that distinction. The game was played during, DURING, a thunderstorm. Heavy rain, lightning, and a power failure at the stadium caused a 55-minute weather delay in the 4th Quarter with the Riders trailing 32-27. When play resumed, the Riders scored a field goal and a touchdown to win the game in front of several thousand brave fans at Mosaic Stadium

I didn't go to the game, and a early morning kept me from watching all of it, and let me say, I will regret it for the rest of my life. But many other people did and they all have their opinions, especially about CBC (the channel that telecast the game, and I remind, are on their final year of the national CFL contract), who didn't return to the game in all areas of the country but Saskatchewan (the blackout was lifted) after the delay ended.

Rod Pedersen (of course he was at the game, he's the radio voice of the Riders)

News Talk Radio's Green Zone had a whole bunch of audio interviews about the game and the delay, especially with Rider CEO and President, Jim Hopson, who said they were very close to calling the game.

Globesports.com had a press release from the CBC about their handling of the game broadcast

Abandoned Stuff by Saskboy was at the game, with a camcorder that recorded the very moment the power failure hit the stadium, and in a move that now puts his blog on my Links that I Like, posted the video.

Jon Keen, newsroom colleague, took time out of his impressive coverage of Bronco Training Camp to give a tip of the hat to the Riders, and a wag of the finger to the CBC

James Whittingham, one half of Cable Regina's James and Kevin Show, showed his displeasure to CBC HD's coverage

The Leader-Post, who put a photo that even Joe Rosenthal would be envious of, on the front page of today's paper

USA Today, yes, that USA Today, had a story about CBC showing Nick Nolte's The Good Thief instead of the end of the football game and compared it to the infamous Heidi Game

And speaking of the Heidi Game, the CBC will forever be publicly connected to it by Wikipedia

You tell me: Should I get an HDTV?

My Current TV

Throughout the last few months, I have been under pressure to get a new HDTV.

When I went to SaskTel to pay my phone bill a few days ago, their store replaced their old Max standard-def TV that was always on Galaxie to a big-screen flat-panel HDTV, always on Galaxie. They also put two HDTVs, one on top of another, facing the window into the mall.

When I go to Wal-Mart, on all of their TVs, HD or not, they show a demo tape of Bell Expressvu's High Definition programming.

When I went to my Co-op store, all of the big-screen (and even small-screen) TVs show The Weather Network. It's not in HD, but it still looks all right.

Those are pretty much enough for anyone to pick up a new television at the very next opportunity. But not me. I am not planning to upgarde, nor do I think I will anytime soon.

Here are my reasons:

  • There's not enough HD programming yet - Most cable specialty channels and American channels are in HD, but none of my local channels (ones hosted in Saskatchewan) are. All of the Canadian networks that broadcast in HD do so in other time zones.
  • I haven't bought anything new for my TV that requires HD - I don't have a fancy next-generation game console, or a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player that would look best on a new HDTV
  • For the money, I don't need it - I'm not saying I can't afford it, a lot of decent HDTVs are very reasonably priced, I just don't think it's worth spending money that would be better spent on unforseen things that I do need.

If you think I should get one anyway, I invite you to tell me where I can find a really good TV for less than $750, or give me tips on winning the lottery, then I'll consider it.

UPDATED Aug 24: I found one. There's a 32" RCA TV at Wal-Mart for just under $700. I haven't bought it, but I know it's there

Do you Agree?: TMZ has no class?

Sticking with the tragic news of Merv Griffin's passing, TMZ.com posted this photo.

A lot of people are saying in the TMZ blog's comments and other websites that the photo is in poor taste and should be removed.

I have to disagree. Sure, on the surface, a picture that displays Vanna White applauding a puzzle that may or may not say "Merv Griffin Died Today" may come off as classless, but I think this is what Merv, a man known for his sense of humour, would have enjoyed. As for Vanna applauding, that's what she does for most of Wheel of Fortune. Applaud. And this applause would be to thank him for everything he has contributed to entertainment through his life. That, and it's nearly impossible to find a picture of her in anything less than a good mood

If you're asking them to remove this picture, why not ask them to take off some of the other pictures on that website?

What do you think?

Remembering a good guy: Merv Griffin

Merv Griffin, entertainer and multimillionaire, died yesterday of Prostate Cancer at age 82. He's the gentleman who created Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, and hosted his Merv Griffin Show for almost 25 years.

His biggest fan, of course, Cosmo Kramer

Rest in Peace, Merv

Republished: The Funniest things I've heard, read, and seen this week (August 5-11)...

Heard - Richard Crouse, CTV Canada AM's movie critic, just reviewed Daddy Day Camp. Well, actually he didn't. Instead, he gave a list of things more enjoyable than watching Daddy Day Camp

1. Cutting an apple in half and watching it turn brown.

2. Watching colonoscopy videos.

3. Poking sharp sticks in your eyes.

4. Eating bugs.

5. Latrine duty.
He actually gave it some credit in the fact it's not Rush Hour 3

The review can be found here. If you live in Canada, the video can be found here

Read - The Dating Girl column in the Leader-Post on Friday. I won't reprint it, but you can read it here.

Seen - Conan's reaction to what a duck did on his stage Thursday...

Updated: How dare you Ben Mulroney? How dare you?!

I wish I wasn't working last night, because I missed a lot of good stuff on live events, that I never bother taping. Barry Bonds hit #756, there were two bench clearing brawls during the Jays-Yankees game, and Ben Mulroney went on a straight-up rant after Greg Neufeld got eliminated from Canadian Idol

Here's what he said (transcript from ctv.ca)...

"I don't know what to say,... No, that's not true. I do know what to say. Canada got this wrong. I don't care if I'm not supposed to say that. Canada got this wrong. Anyone watching our show should know. If they don't know, I'm telling them. You are a bona fide star. I hope to God that you benefiited as much from being on this show as we benefitted from having you. If that turns out to be the case, your future is absolutely limitless."

Updated: I found the video clip of it (thanks to idolstalker.com)

Uh, what? What did you say to me, Mr. Ben Mulroney? Some nerve you have calling out your country after a contestant was eliminated fairly in a national talent contest that you host. No matter how good he is in the previous episodes (and I watched some of his performances, he was pretty good), a lot of people thought the other contestants were better this week, or didn't bother voting (which was likely, the performances and voting fell on a holiday). Like you can control that.

I am disappointed that Greg's leaving, but at the same time, I am not surprised. I honestly thought Greg had a terrible night. His performance of "We are the Champions" was lacklustre at best in my opinion. I think the Canadian public got it right in voting for someone else. It proves it doesn't matter how good your previous performances were, you cannot expect them to carry you through week after week. You have keep getting better as the competition gets tougher, and you cannot let your guard down for a moment. But I'm sure he'll find success in the business one way or another.

As for Ben, shame on you. Although it takes a lot to express yourself, I think you were wrong in doing so publicly. As a host of a competition, you are supposed to be impartial and not display your favourites. Everybody on that show is equally deserving of winning, and even though there may be a performer ahead of everybody else early on, it's not your say as to who your viewers, who take the time to watch your show each and every week, should vote for. It's their call, and you can't change that.

It's almost here...

We are exactly one year away from the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing, China.

NBC is already billing its coverage

Despite China being a full 12-hours ahead of the East Coast, globesports.com says NBC will air more than 3600 hours of coverage over multiple networks, and online through broadband video, a good portion of it being live.

Despite all that, I think CBC will show them up. Almost all of their coverage will be live, especially overnight, and they have been doing it that way for years.
